Supporting the Next Generation of Hairdressers

At our salon, we’ve always believed in the importance of nurturing new talent and helping shape the next generation of hairdressers. Apprenticeships are at the heart of this, they give young people the chance to learn, grow, and gain valuable hands-on experience in a real salon environment while studying at college.

We’re proud to currently have two apprentices on our team.

Megan is now in her second year of hairdressing. She spends one full day each week at college, developing her technical knowledge, while the rest of her time is salon-based, putting her skills into practice and learning directly from our experienced team. It’s amazing to see how much she has progressed and how her confidence grows with every client she works with.

Freddie is the newest member of our team, and our very first male apprentice! Fresh out of school, he has joined us with great enthusiasm and is already showing lots of promise. Freddie attends Debut Academy one day a week and spends the rest of his time learning alongside us in the salon. We’re excited to watch his journey unfold.

Why Apprentices Matter

Supporting apprentices is more than just teaching skills – it’s about keeping the industry alive. Hairdressing is an art, but it’s also a profession that requires dedication, creativity, and real-world practice. Apprenticeships allow young people to build those foundations while salons like ours ensure the future of hairdressing stays strong.

The Challenge for Salons

While we are committed to investing in apprentices, it has become increasingly difficult for small businesses to sustain this due to recent changes introduced by the government. With rises in National Insurance and other financial pressures, the cost of taking on and supporting apprentices is higher than ever.

For independent salons, this creates a real challenge. We want to continue providing opportunities for young people, but the financial strain on small businesses is becoming harder to manage. Despite this, we remain passionate about training, mentoring, and creating a space where apprentices like Megan and Freddie can flourish.

Looking Ahead

We believe that supporting apprentices is an investment not only in our salon but in the future of the industry. The passion and fresh energy they bring remind us why we love what we do. With the right support, both from clients who choose local salons and hopefully from future government initiatives , we can ensure hairdressing continues to thrive for generations to come.
