The Blackheath Double Crown & Other Family Hair Mysteries We Solved This Month

At Blackheath Hair & Co, we have been styling this wonderful community for nearly 30 years. In that time, we’ve realised that clients don’t just come to us for a trim or a fresh set of highlights. They usually come to us with a mystery.

Hair is unpredictable. It changes after pregnancy, behaves oddly around cowlicks, and throws tantrums when the weather shifts. This week, we wanted to take you behind the scenes of the salon floor and share three very real, highly specific “hair mysteries” our team solved for local clients this month.

Mystery 1: The Toddler’s First Cut (Featuring a Double Crown and Curls)

The Case: A local mum brought her 4-year-old son in for his very first haircut. He had gorgeous, long curly locks that the family wanted to preserve, but he also inherited a prominent double crown (two swirling growth patterns at the back of the head that cause hair to stick straight up).
The Solution: Our stylist Alex took the case. Cutting a double crown on a toddler requires severe precision,if you cut it too short, it sprouts upwards like a cartoon character; if you leave it too heavy, it weighs down the natural curls. Alex mapped out the hair’s natural fall, strategically texturised the weight around the crown, and preserved the length of the curls perfectly.

Mystery 2: The Fire-and-Ice Scalp Dilemma

The Case: A client came to see Jess with a frustrating dilemma. They desperately wanted a light, fresh summer haircut to take the weight off their head, but they suffer from severe scalp dermatitis. Past salon visits elsewhere had left their scalp flared up, itchy, and irritated from aggressive washing and harsh products.
The Solution: Jess and the assistant team completely flipped the standard salon process. Instead of jumping straight to the backwash, they did an extensive scalp analysis. Jess swapped out standard clarifying shampoos for ultra-calming, derm-friendly formulas, and used a hyper-gentle, slow head-massage technique. The result? A stunningly light cut and a completely calm, happy scalp.

Mystery 3: The “Accidental Wave” Transition

The Case: A client came to see Kyla (who was recently promoted to Stylist!) with a classic London hair problem: a “mop” of hair that had completely lost its shape. The client had spent years straight-drying it, unaware that their hair texture had actually changed over time.
The Solution: Kyla looked at the hair damp and spotted a hidden wave pattern that was being blown straight out. Instead of a standard blunt cut, Kyla introduced a structured, layered shape that encouraged the natural wave to bounce. For the first time in her life, the client walked out with effortless, beautiful waves, proving you’re never too old to discover your true hair texture.

What’s Your Hair Mystery?

Your hair doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but it does leave clues. Whether you are dealing with a post-pregnancy texture change, a fringe that refuses to lay flat, or a scalp that needs extra love, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Our team, including Chris, Emily, Danny, Helen, Jess, Alex, and Kyla,  they love nothing more than sitting down, listening to your hair struggles, and creating a bespoke plan.

Bring your hair mysteries to us at our Montpelier Vale salon. We’ll supply the expert solutions, a hot cup of tea, and one of our famous complimentary chocolate brownies while we solve it together!
